Our second Valkyrie Rapier Open Tournament was a great success, with 21 competitors fighting 15 rounds over the course of the day. Fighters came from all over the Pacific Northwest, representing Seattle’s Lonin League and Portland’s Swordguild: Portland, along with Vancouver’s Society for Creative Anachronism (SCA), Academie Duello, and Valkyrie WMAA. Everyone fought well, and we were thrilled to see the standard of both technical skill and fighter conduct rise above the already high bar that was set during our first event. After a hard day of fighting and a tense tie-breaker fight for the top spot, our final standings were as follows:
- Category 1 & Overall Winner: Matheus Olmedo, Academie Duello (13 wins + tie-breaker)
- Category 2 Winner: Jordan Both, Valkyrie WMAA (12 wins)
- Category 3 Winner: Tristan Fackler, Swordguild: Portland (7 wins)
All competitors moved up or down our tournament series rankings based on their performance. We also saw a lot of growth in our middle ranks, and decided to add a new tournament category for future events. From now onwards, Category 1 is for championship level fighters with substantial tournament experience, including winning or consistently medaling in large open tournaments; Categories 2 and 3 are for fighters with some tournament experience, with Category 2 being reserved for fighters who have a win or two under their belts and who are almost ready to compete at the top rank; Category 4 is for fighters with little or no tournament experience. We’ve still got room for plenty of new fighters, and anyone can join the series by competing in our next event!
Congratulations once again to our winners, and thanks very much to our fighters, our hard working judges and volunteers, and our awesome prize sponsors. We hope to see all of you again at our next tournament on February 11th, 2017. Registration is now open, so make sure to save the date!
