Thursday Schedule Update for March

We’ve made some changes to our Thursday class schedule for the month of March. As David will be on vacation at the beginning of the month, and we will be attending the Vancouver International Swordplay Symposium at the end of the month, we’ve decided to forego a Flavour of the Month course, and offer a number of independent classes throughout March. Vancouver International Swordplay Symposium

On March 27-29, 2015, Academie Duello will be hosting the Vancouver International Swordplay Symposium (VISS). Billed as “a worldwide gathering of swordplay enthusiasts”, VISS offers three full days of workshops and lectures by swordplay instructors and scholars from around the world, along with a Saturday evening gala. UBC Medieval Studies Presentation

Last week, we were invited to give a presentation on longsword combat and history to a second-year Medieval Studies class at the University of British Columbia. One of our instructors, Kaja, gave a 30-minute talk on the rise and decline of the longsword as a weapon of war in Western Europe, the German and Italian martial arts manual traditions, and some of the challenges faced by modern interpreters of these texts. January Longsword Class

January’s Flavour of the Month was the longsword. Over the course of 4 classes, we worked through a range of drills to improve our cutting form and flow, and develop strategies for evasion and deception.
