Welcome to the Laboratory!
At Valkyrie Western Martial Arts Assembly, we are martial arts researchers. Our job is getting under the hood of effective martial arts practice, figuring out what makes it work, and using that knowledge to turn our students into the best fighters they can be. The training floor is our lab, and grappling, striking, and weapon work are our subjects.
We believe that good body mechanics and balanced strength are essential to injury prevention and longevity; that the best fighters are not the ones who know the most techniques, but the ones who can make what they know work in any context; and that everyone learns best when they are having fun. Our training emphasizes adaptability, play, and dynamic problem-solving, and our students are equally comfortable on the ground and in a swordfight.
Everyone should know how to fight. It’s a fundamental human skill, and one of the best ways to build a healthy relationship between your body and mind. Our classes are open to students of all abilities and experience levels; and all ethnic backgrounds, gender identities, and sexual orientations. Our goal is to help you become the strongest, fittest, deadliest version of yourself, no matter where you begin. Join us.
Happy 2015! To kick off the new year, we’re adding another evening of classes to our weekly roster, and updating the weekly training schedule. As of January 5th, we will be moving our rapier and Beginner Program classes to Wednesday evenings, and adding a new Advanced Class on Thursdays.
This month, Valkyrie WMAA is opening up all of our classes to drop-in visitors. Whether you’re a newcomer who’s curious to see what we’re all about, or a current student who’s never been to a wrestling class, you’re welcome to check out any of our December classes for free!
How long have you been practicing martial arts? Which one(s)? I started taking lessons in martial arts in September 2013; just last year. I quickly got into the Western Martial Arts (and other bits and pieces) that go into the different Valkyrie classes. Before that, my only experience with martial arts was 6 or so kickboxing classes when I was 15. What brought you to Valkyrie WMAA? I went to my first Valkyrie class essentially…
