Find out how to become a Valkyrie in three easy steps!
Welcome to the Laboratory!
At Valkyrie Western Martial Arts Assembly, we are martial arts researchers. Our job is getting under the hood of effective martial arts practice, figuring out what makes it work, and using that knowledge to turn our students into the best fighters they can be. The training floor is our lab, and grappling, striking, and weapon work are our subjects.
We believe that good body mechanics and balanced strength are essential to injury prevention and longevity; that the best fighters are not the ones who know the most techniques, but the ones who can make what they know work in any context; and that everyone learns best when they are having fun. Our training emphasizes adaptability, play, and dynamic problem-solving, and our students are equally comfortable on the ground and in a swordfight.
Everyone should know how to fight. It’s a fundamental human skill, and one of the best ways to build a healthy relationship between your body and mind. Our classes are open to students of all abilities and experience levels; and all ethnic backgrounds, gender identities, and sexual orientations. Our goal is to help you become the strongest, fittest, deadliest version of yourself, no matter where you begin. Join us.
Big Gay Sword Day 2: Sword Harder was held at Valkyrie this November 16th, with eight amazing workshops from Sam Swords, Jon Mills, Claire Wemyss, and Kaja Sadowski. We had 16 attendees from as far away as London, England, and were able to run a killer event at accessible rates thanks to our sponsors Costin Law, Ash Banks, Dillon Beyer, Owen Elliot, Sigmund Werndorf, and The Proving Ground. Thank you all! This year, we’re not…
It’s time for our annual instructor switch-up, where we shuffle our teaching pairs to give coaches a chance to teach with new partners, and students a chance to work with someone new without having to change their schedules. You might also notice some schedule changes for our ongoing martial arts classes, and even a new addition. Here’s what’s new…
Valkyrie WMAA is going to be closed from Thursday, September 5th until Saturday, September 8th, and it’s because a whole bunch of our staff and students are heading south of the border to participate in Swordsquatch 2019. This weekend-long event is one of the keystones of the Pacific Northwest’s HEMA community, and members of Valkyrie WMAA have participated since its inception in 2016.
When we tell other martial arts instructors and school owners that we offer sliding scale pricing for events at Valkyrie, one of the most common responses that we get is: “But don’t you lose a lot of money on that?” On the one hand, making money isn’t really the primary goal of offering these kinds of discounts. Rather, we’re concerned with making training accessible to as many students as possible, and especially with opening up…
