Welcome to our Violence Dynamics Vancouver profile series, where you’ll get to know our instructors and event organizers in the leadup to VioDy Vancouver 2017! First up, meet self defense legend and VioDy co-founder Rory Miller.
Rory Miller is a seventeen-year veteran of the Multnomah County Sheriff’s Office Corrections Division. He has served as a deputy, sergeant, tactical team member and leader, mental health specialist, trainer, and investigator, and traveled to Iraq as an advisor to the Iraqi Corrections Service in 2008. His martial arts background is equally extensive, and he has trained in Judo and Jujutsu since the early 1980s. In the self defense world, Miller is best known as the author of Meditations on Violence, which continues to be one of the most influential books on violence dynamics. He has been a full-time teacher and writer since 2011. His publications include Facing Violence, Conflict Communication and Violence: A Writer’s Guide, and he blogs regularly at Chiron Training.
Along with co-founding the first Violence Dynamics Seminar, Miller was instrumental to developing the Conflict Communication curriculum that lies at the core of every seminar. He’s also one of the minds behind the Conflict Research Group, a coalition of subject matter experts from all corners of the self-defense world that produces online courses and publishes Conflict Manager Magazine. Drawing on his breadth of experience in corrections, martial arts, and self-defense instruction, Miller continues to be one of the most important voices in the study of violence.
