Chicory, anyway. One of the advantages of having a wife who works for a spice and organic dry goods distributor is the wonderful panoply of flavours that flow through the house. We get all kinds of samples. Some are for baking or photographing, others are just surplus. Today I found a sample container of Chicory, so I’m sipping on that instead of my morning tea. No idea how people can confuse this taste for coffee. It’s not a bad taste…I used a french press, the same way I make my coffee…it’s strong, sweet, and somewhat malty with a smokiness from the roasting. Tasty hot, unpleasantly sour and bitter when cold. Interesting, though.

Class last night didn’t work out the way I had expected. We had a shortage of safety gear and uneven numbers, so I had to make the decision in the second half to split the class into two. I worked with the new students on basic rapier positions and lunge mechanics, and let the experienced students go on some of the advanced drills. I was hoping the instructions I gave them would be enough to let them follow the drill structure and self-educate. I think it was working, but hard to tell. The new students got paired up with advanced students as those students fell out of the drill portion, and that worked very well. Some serious potential starting to show…

The first hour was the best, though. Fitness and unarmed work is just soaring along. We worked a basic four-count attack with a nice spin kick finish…and damned if everyone didn’t look great doing it. From the first class start of slow and low kicks, they are now all hitting some sweet head level hook kicks, and easily flowing into follow-up punching. So pretty to watch. Early and hard physical training is the way to go.

I was feeling pleased with everyone’s progress, and remarked to my wife that I felt pretty good about where everyone was after the first month of classes. They were a little ahead of where I expected them to be. And that was when she pointed out that we had only just wrapped the second week of classes…I guess the twice a week thing threw me off. Sure made me happy, though…
